For the rooms where the sea air drifts in through the sash window.
The rope-and-linen lamp is one of those quiet British classics — a thick twisted hemp-rope column tied in a single figure-of-eight knot, coiled at its base into a loose ring, and finished with a tapered drum shade in undyed natural linen. Aldeburgh is our take on it: faithful in proportion, generous in scale, designed for the rooms that take their cues from the coast.
Named for Aldeburgh — the Suffolk fishing-town-turned-arts-festival on the shingle coast, where Benjamin Britten composed and the North Sea rolls grey-blue under a wide pale sky. Aldeburgh is the lamp for a guest-room bedside in a weatherboarded cottage, a hallway console in a Cotswolds farmhouse, a slim shelf above a linen sofa, or any room that prefers natural fibres, soft light and the company of a good paperback.

Where it earns its place
Aldeburgh is the lamp you put beside the bed in the spare room, on the hallway console near the front door, on a shelf above the reading chair, or on a small writing table near a window that looks at trees or water. The figure-of-eight knot is a genuine design moment — close up, you can see every twist of the rope; from across the room, it reads as a sculptural natural-fibre column.
Where it works best
It pairs beautifully with linen bedding, jute rugs, painted-wood furniture, oak floors, ceramic stoneware and old hardback books. It earns its keep in a coastal cottage, a Cotswolds farmhouse, a country-edge new-build with linen sofas, or a city flat that wants a softer corner. Pair on a console with a wall-mounted Whitechapel amber-glass gooseneck for layered evening light, or beneath one of Marlow's scalloped brass sconces for a properly considered hallway moment.
A note on the materials
The rope is real hemp — woven, twisted and knotted by hand, with the slightly variable colour and the soft fibrous texture that natural fibre always has. The linen shade is woven natural beige with the gentle slubs and weave-irregularities that give linen its character. This is not a lamp pretending to be natural — it is natural. Each piece is subtly individual.
